Mass productivity of water based and hot melt wire enamels and enameled wire

This paper deals with problems related to mass productivity of “water based” and “hot melt” type polyester wire enamels and enameled wires, the development of which is strongly desired to cope with the problem of environmental pollution. In the present investigation, an electric radiant type oven of a commercial scale was built so as to study the enameling conditions, power consumption and exhaust gas. Furthermore, the properties of the enameled: wires and their time-dependent changes were also investigated. As a result, it was determined that the water based polyester enamel produced in the existing facilities could be used without concern for pollution and with little need to modify the facilities, while the hot melt type enamel could be used like cresol type enamels currently in use without fear of pollution if the production facilities were partially revamped. Needless to say, the exhaust gas was free from cresol, resulting in a remarkable environmental improvement in and around the factory. The wires coated with the water based and the hot melt type enamels favorably compared to cresol type polyester enameled wires currently in use concerning various characteristics including time-dependent changes, determined over a period of one year and a half.
