Repulsion Mechanism Applied in Resistive-Type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

The characteristics of a repulsion mechanism driven by various short-circuit currents in a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) are investigated. The velocity of the repulsion mechanism was simulated with various driving currents, and a design was proposed. To ensure that the short-circuit current flowing through the superconducting coil can be cut off within a short time (10 ms), a current interruption test with a 12-kV vacuum interrupter was conducted, revealing highly reliable interruption with various opening velocities (0.6-1.5 m/s). With a quick response, the SFCL worked well for various short-circuit currents ranging from 100 A (critical current of the superconducting coil) to 40 kA.
