Orthosis has been the most common aid for polio patients. Currently, orthosis and exoskeleton are different; the former being static and the latter highly dynamic. In practice, most orthosis are cumbersome and unnatural comparing to the normal human lower limb gait. By upgrading the current technology of the orthosis, the quality of life for polio patients can be improved. The objective of this program and its auxiliary hardware attempt to bridge the gap between static and dynamic aids, giving a degree of adaptability and dynamism towards static orthosis, especially in simple two-dimensional joint movement. The methodology of this paper are as follows: A polio patient volunteered as case basis; data, software and hardware parameter was built into the patient's specification. Electromyography signals are recorded and waveform patterns are then compared to obtain logical configuration. Resulting signals can be used to control an actuator when supported with a driver. The results show that polio patients still have electrical potential when activating atrophied muscles, and the corresponding signals can be used as electrical input for actuators with enough amplification and filtering. Further upgrades such as gait relation and correction will be intended for future research.
