Design of Optical Waveguides Carrying LP$ \mathbf {_{01}}$ Mode for WDM Systems

Here, a design algorithm using the quadratic finite element method (FEM) is presented, so as to design various optical waveguides based on LP
$ _{01}$
mode compatible with WDM systems. Computation shows that the propagation constant by the proposed quadratic FEM is accurate enough for direct numerical derivation, and the calculation of subsequent dispersion constant. Here, we have explored the possibility of designing nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber as well as broadband dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) carrying fundamental LP
$ _{01}$
mode. This technique has the potential to eliminate the chromatic dispersion over a wide bandwidth, without having the limitation of periodic conversion of LP
$ _{01}$
to higher order mode and vice versa. The maximum value of average compensated dispersion over the wavelength span ranging from 1480 to 1580 nm is minimized with respect to the various profile parameters and length ratio. Computations show that an optimally designed DCF can reduce the dispersion of existing conventional single-mode fiber (CSMF) from 17.56 to 2.13 ps/nm
$\cdot$
km over the above wavelength span, when it is concatenated with the existing CSMF in a length ratio of 1:16.64.
