Technological improvement for in situ spectroscopy applied to coastal water monitoring

The pressure provided by the constant increase of pollution due to modern life requires not only more efficiency in terms of measurement accuracy but also the development of faster detection means. In that way it has been natural to bring spectroscopic analysis closer to the underwater environment. The benefit brought by the current evolution of fibre optics and all the surrounding micro-optic technology opens very interesting perspectives for a new generation of field instrumentation. The aim of this presentation will be focused on the performances of a versatile spectrometer designed specifically to be integrated in small conventional underwater housings followed by draft descriptions of some applications which may be either passive or active, like chemical measurements with FOS (fiber optic sensors) based on relevant spectroscopic techniques. The concept of the prototype has been performed according to the spatial and temporal correlation of multiple fiber optics channels simultaneously detected and spectrally analysed on a matrix video frame. The spectral range will cover UV-Visible and NIR by combining on the same set up different stages adapted to the specifications of each spectroscopic analysis requirements.
