A scalable coordinated approach towards optimal reactive power compensation in distribution network with DGs

With the increasing penetration of distributed generations (DGs) and complexity of network structure, the compensation in distribution network faces huge challenge. The active power and reactive power supplying by DGs are usually seen as an effective solution in improving voltage quality and reducing energy loss. This paper proposes a new local compensation method based on planning and adaptive control of renewable DGs and capacitor, and the uncertainty and randomness of active and reactive power output of renewable DGs (e.g, wind generation and solar photovoltaic) is considered by establishing related probabilistic models. The performance of the proposed solution is assessed through a comparative study by carrying out a set of simulation experiments for a range of system scenarios. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed local compensation can well adapt to the scalability of distribution network. And with the introduction of adaptive controlling, the optimization of DGs and capacitor is sure to be more effective.
