Design and implementation of a TCP/IP protocol analyser

This paper examines the design and implementation of a TCP/IP protocol analyser using the programming language Occam. After an overview of the analyser, important design matters related with the monitoring process and the choice of data flow process decomposition as the design method are considered. The detailed examination of the design of the TCP/IP protocol analyser follows, including the channel protocols that it uses and its software structure. Important implementation issues are also highlighted. Finally, three test environments are presented, together with an analysis of the behaviour of TCP/IP protocol analyser in each of them, and some conclusions are given.
