Femtosecond insulator-metal transition in VO2 induced by intense multi-THz transients

A non-thermal insulator-metal transition in VO
₂
has been driven by a non-resonant excitation at frequencies around 25 THz. A switching time of 80 fs is found, corresponding to approximately two cycles of the driving field.
