Creating a 3D parking area design via a mobile measurement platform

The paper describes the potential of a 2D laser scanner and a very accurate SPAN (Synchronized Position Attitude Navigation) navigation combination in a mobile measurement platform constructed by our department. The laser scanner captures raw data of the environment and SPAN estimates the actual position. Thanks to the high level of exactness of cooperation of both of these devices it is possible to determine accurate information on spatial distribution of objects in the parking lot. This data from the mobile measurement platform is useful for location of common object such as buildings, roads and pole-like objects as well as for spatial designation of untypical objects like oversized cargo. Information captured by our mobile measurement platform is used to create a coordinate background of the real environment. If additional video information is used, it should create a 3D virtual reality of the actual parking lot. The practical experiment and measurement of the university campus shows applicability of captured data to determination of the size of the environment's objects.
