Power quality monitoring systems more information than just waveforms and events

The traditional role of a Power Quality Monitoring System (PQMS) has been to capture power quality information from power quality instruments and present the information in a format that allows the waveforms and trended data to be presented for analysis of events, the evaluation of the overall quality of power, by considering harmonics and flicker, and produce reports for reporting compliance to regulatory standards. This role remains the core capability of any PQMS system. However, with enhanced communications, the ability to obtain data from a wide variety of instruments and smart devices and expanded analysis and correlation capabilities, PQMS have become the basis for improving system wide operation, including the rapid implementation of corrective action when events occur, such as faults, improved asset management of key system equipment, and indication of pending component failures, allowing for scheduled maintenance rather than unscheduled repairs. In addition, the information available has value to many of the departments with a utility organization, and by making the information available to the different departments, increases the value of the information, and provides for even more value as power system engineers apply their experience and knowledge.
