Acoustic emission features of material removal during single grit scratching

Acoustic Emission monitoring can be used to extract the features of material removal mechanism in grinding. It could also be used to predict the process performance which might be helpful to improve the process efficiency and surface quality. This research aims to distinguish the material removal characteristics of the grinding process at micro scale by using Acoustic Emission (AE) energy released due to the alteration of material internal structure during single grit-workpiece interactions. A CBN grit of 40/50 mesh size was used for the single grit scratching tests on the En24T steel. The AE features during scratch test revealed that different stages of material removal — rubbing, ploughing and cutting generate different AE signal characteristics in terms of power intensity, amplitude and frequency. By monitoring of these characteristics to identify the material removal stages during the grinding process can help to improve the process performance.
