UHF Dipole-AMC Combination for RFID Applications

The design of a novel dipole-artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) combination for UHF radio frequency identification (RFID) band, showing proper performance in the proximity of metallic surfaces, surrounding a metallic can and being conformed around the human wrist is presented. The prototypes of the dipole antenna alone and dipole antenna combined with the AMC are manufactured using laser micromachining. To the authors' knowledge , this is the first letter presenting the actual functionality of antennas and AMCs at UHF RFID frequency in order to insulate the user's body from undesired exposure to electromagnetic radiation. The experimental results of the manufactured prototypes in terms of return loss and radiation pattern measurements in an anechoic chamber are shown for comparison.
