Hybrid UTD/statistical technique for indoor radio propagation modeling

Mobile radio communication has been growing at an astonishing rate in the past decade, both as a technology and as a business. The performance of mobile systems, such as PCS networks and wireless LANs, is greatly influenced by the channel characteristics. The location and orientation of the base-station antenna are selected to optimise system performance and maximize system capacity. To save costs, it is preferable to use simulation tools to make initial plans before detailed field measurements are performed for the final configuration. Early effort of this type of path loss modeling began with statistical models. A deterministic model known as ray-tracing is now increasing in popularity. However, ray-tracing approach becomes overburdened by the need to include excessive numbers of rays when the furniture distribution is complex. This project introduces a hybrid approach which seeks to increase the accuracy of the ray-tracing prediction by limited statistical data.
