Fuzzy logic approach for a locomotion interface control

The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of a new method for controlling the motors of a treadmill - based locomotion interface for navigation in Virtual Environments (VEs). Locomotion interfaces help users to travel in virtual worlds in a natural manner, providing a better sense of immersion than traditional interfaces. A Fuzzy Logic (FL) control was used in order to control the interface and the simulation are made in Matlab. Two types of control were designed, for the two motors of the device. The user's feet are tracked with an optical system in order to get their positions, which will be inputs for the control module.
