With a mixture of respect and envy, Japan watchers term this technically advanced country “Japan Inc.” It is a label that Japanese businessmen, particularly those concerned with international trade negotiations, would prefer to see excised from the Westerner's vocabulary. But it will not go away, principally because of the success of the Japanese in producing high-quality, high-technology products that are competitive in the world marketplace. As one Japanese businessman put it, “Japan's problem is that she makes and sells to the West the same products that are made and sold in the West, but more cheaply and of better quality.”
