With technology approaching the limits of semiconductor speeds, computer scientists search for other ways to meet the processing demands of more sophisticated applications. Real-time processing, artificial intelligence, and distributed systems have each triggered computer architectures suited to their individual needs. The expectation of general purpose machines may give way to very dedicated systems. Common to these new designs, though, is the exploitation of parallel processing.
