PHY front end design for emerging 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless devices

This paper presents a framework for the physical layer (PHY) front-end design of the 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless devices based on IEEE 802.15.3c, ECMA 387, and WirelessHD standards. System parameters such as receiver noise figure, antenna gain, antenna beam width, and transmitter power are calculated considering standards and state-of-the-art technology limitations. A methodology to find the minimum receiver antenna beam width for a 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless link is proposed. It is shown that a minimum beam width of 65° is required for 60 GHz wireless receivers.
