While the majority of monolithic filters have been realized as separate chips, apart from the codecs they typically are designed to serve, chips from American Microsystems Inc., Santa Clara Calif., are an exception. Last year, AMI introduced its S3505 codec, a CMOS device that combines the encoder, decoder, and filters on a single chip. Other manufacturers will introduce products this year that will include the codec and filter on the same substrate. Nor will the trend stop there. Codecs and other functions, such as modulation and demodulation, will eventually be available with on-chip filtering.
