On the logarithmic property of basic immittance pairs

This report explains the output of a simple two-element voltage or current dividing circuit (here called a general divider) as being proportional to the logarithm of the input. The general divider's logarithmic property was noted while analyzing a resistive voltage divider. This is extended to show that 1) dividers comprising pairs of passive elements exhibit the logarithmic property and 2) the output can be a current, voltage, or frequency. Applications are discussed in examples; advantages over logarithmic amplifiers log-amps, are noted. The phenomenon's simplicity yields several cost saving benefits.
