An estimation of the CO2 storage capacity of the structural traps in the southern Jeju Basin, offshore southern Korea

We analyzed 2-D seismic and well-log data from the southern Jeju Basin, offshore southern Korea, to estimate the CO
₂
storage capacity of the structural traps. Sand intervals (>;10-m gross thickness) were identified from the gamma-ray log and their porosity was estimated from the shale-corrected neutron log. A total of 14 structural traps was delineated from the depth-converted maps of the sand intervals. The reservoir quality of the traps away from the well control was predicted by seismic inversion and multi-attribute transform. The total storage capacity of the closures at in-situ conditions, assuming a 50%-CO
₂
saturation in the pore space, is about 1034 Mt, which is approximately twice the CO
₂
emission of South Korea in 2009.
