Experimental set up for the artificial generation of well defined microstructures for calibration of oceanographical microstructure probes

Summary form only given. During the last decades microstructure research in the oceans became increasingly important. For this field of measurements new types of very sensitive sensors were created, highly resolving in space and time. To tackle the associated sensor calibration problems down to sub millimeter scales, special experimental set ups have been designed, particularly, for example, to produce quantitatively well defined and precisely measured thermal microstructures in the sub millimeter range. Calibration results of temperature sensors with better than 0.1 mk resolution at different low and high profiling speeds and up to 20000 samples per second are reported.
