Hydrological modelling of catchments using MIKE SHE

This study focuses on the application of physically based distributed modelling system MIKE SHE on Salebhata catchment, lying in the middle reaches of Mahanadi River Basin. Remote sensing data were processed for generating Topography map and land use/cover maps, respectively. Thematic layers for topography, Thiessen polygons for rainfall and evapotranspiration, and soil were prepared in ARC GIS 9.3. May 2009), respectively, considering different efficiency criteria between observed and simulated discharge. The results show that the model is capable of simulating the hydrological water balance. In this study, efficiency criteria i.e. Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), was applied to the simulated result to analyze the predictability of the simulated runoff. During calibraton, NSE, of 0.78 were obtained for Salebhata catchment. Calibrated MIKE SHE model was used to simulate hydrological water balance during validation. In validation all the efficiency criteria were within appreciable range satisfying the modeling purpose. During validation an error of 12 mm (0.503%) for runoff was obtained.
