Design and optimization of permanent magnet inductors

Permanent magnet inductors (PMIs) utilize a permanent magnet (PM) to partially offset the flux in the magnetic core due to the dc component of the winding current. In this work two PMI architectures are modeled using magnetic equivalent circuits (MECs). Using these MECs, optimized PMI designs are achieved using a population-based design algorithm. By comparing Pareto-optimal fronts, it is shown that the mass of a PMI is less than that of a traditional EI core inductor for a given loss.
