Novel Total Site Management concept improves radio base station site energy efficiency

The need for reliable, cost-efficient energy solutions applicable for bad- and off-grid locations is increasing in the telecommunication sector. This is due to the growing number of radio base station sites in these types of areas and for the rising trend of diesel fuel prices. The Green Energy Controller, a part of Nokia Siemens Networks' energy solution offering, provides the functionality to control and monitor the different power sources at the site, takes care of energy generation and consumption parameters and collects alarms and measurements from the site. To provide the functionality to manage and control the site remotely research and development of the Total Site Management concept was conducted as a part of the Smart Grids and Energy Markets (SGEM) program. SGEM is one of the research programs of CLEEN, the strategic centre for science, technology and innovation of the Finnish energy and environment cluster. This article will describe the novel Total Site Management concept and the benefits it brings for the base station site energy efficiency.
