Preparation and adsorption performance of mesoporous Fe-Ce binary oxide for effective removal of arsenite

A novel mesoporous binary oxide with iron and cerium (MBOIC) was prepared and used as the adsorbent for the removal of arsenite from water solution. Effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage and arsenite concentration on the adsorption efficiency have been investigated. The results showed that the adsorbent MBOIC had a high removal rate of arsenite in water solution at the pH range of 5∼9. The adsorption equilibrium data can be well described by Langmuir isotherm model with R

> 0.99 and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 104.16 mg/g. The kinetics of adsorption process followed a pseudo-second order equation, and the equilibrium was reached in about 1 h. Aqueous solutions with relatively high ionic strength, hardness or alkalinity did not decrease the removal efficiency of arsenite by MBOIC.
