Fibrinolytic process in static magnetic fields

The authors investigated the effects of magnetic fields on the fibrinolytic process. Dissolution of fibrin polymers by plasmin under a static, and homogeneous magnetic field at 7.84 T was investigated using two methods. In order to avoid the effect of gradient magnetic fields, one ml of fibrin clots in tubes were used to observe the fibrinolysis in a homogeneous magnetic field at 7.84 T. The authors observed no effect of a homogeneous magnetic field at 7.84 T on the dissolution of a fibrin. Results of the turbidity measurement of fibrin gels also show that a homogeneous magnetic field at 7.84 T did not affect fibrinolysis. On the other hand, the authors observed significant enhancement in fibrinolysis when gradient magnetic fields (B/spl middot/dB/dz=350-400 T/sup 2//m) were applied to the fibrinolytic process in the fibrin column.
