Multiservices and multiband optical signal generation for hybrid access networks

A novel optical transmitter, capable of delivering simultaneously a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service to an optical network unit (ONU) and two different wireless services in three separated bands to a base station (BS), is proposed and demonstrated by simulation. Multiservice modulation of an optical carrier is demonstrated for fiber-optic transmission of a 400 Mbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal, a 800 Mbit/s 16-QAM OFDM signal and a 1.6 Gbit/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FTTH baseband signal on a single wavelength, using a commercial z-cut dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). At the BS, by heterodyning in a high-speed photodiode, the two different wireless services are delivered in the two separate bands of ultra-wideband (UWB), 3.1 to 10.6 GHz and 57 to 64 GHz, and simultaneously at the 41 to 48 GHz band.
