Integrated environmental, security, power monitoring and control in telecommunication remote sites

Power systems monitors controllers (PSMCs) are already widely used by provisioning, maintenance and surveillance people. They offer many advantages. However, PSMCs can be used in broader applications and yield additional returns to the customers. This paper describes the many benefits of integrating environmental and security functions into the standard PSMCs, in remote sites such as controlled environment vaults (CEVs), huts, cellular sites and microwave sites. Remote sites need to include stringent environmental requirements to protect the equipment such as the batteries as well as the personnel. It is essential that full PSMC capabilities be available. Alarm collection capability is a necessity to ensure reliability. In order to be efficient, all of these functions should be integrated into the existing management system. One way of achieving the above mentioned goals is to purchase different apparatuses that would probably come from different vendors. However, this is not desirable for the following reasons: integration into the network system would be very complex, if feasible; and; total investment would be higher. Having all the functions integrated into one apparatus would facilitate the integration into existing customer management network. The adaptability to different networks and environments is also a significant benefit. Significant cost reduction can be obtained by using a single system. This document shows theoretical results, as well as actual results obtained in a real customer environment which confirm the benefits and the cost reductions gained by applying the principles described.
