Text string location on images

This paper presents a complete system for extracting character strings from unconstrained maps. The system's major parts include a non-directional search using a scoring scheme, a directional search employing pruning heuristics, a string growth technique using graphical constraints, a string orientation estimation strategy handling erratic cases, and a post-processing procedure to restructure and resolve overlapping strings. The system is tested on some maps with varying data complexity.
