Time and frequency domain simulation of photonic nanocavities

The confinement of light is an important prerequisite for the excitation of light-matter interactions and nonlinear optics. Photonic nanocavities can have very high quality factors that lead to the desired confinement. We study the feasibility of time domain and frequency domain formulations for the computation of the resonance frequencies and the external quality factors of photonic nanocavities. The time domain approach is accelerated by a special postprocessing technique for the recorded time signals, whereas the eigenvalue computation includes the complex coefficients of the PML absorbing boundary condition. The results of both approaches agree very well.
