Design and implementation of a low-cost communication panel

Patients with spoken language limitations, children and adults alike, commonly utilize diverse communication enhancement teclinologies; among which we have communication panels. Communication panels contain distinct buttons, each assigned to a specific message defined by a therapist based on the specific speech impediment suffered by the patient. These devices can be static, which show only images, or electronic, which emit a voice message or some other audible or visual response when the appropriate button is pressed. This project focuses on the latter: An electronic communication panel with 8 messages, each 2.5 seconds in length, based on a modular circuit and portable solid-state audio module controlled by a battery-operated microprocessor. Two versions of the system were developed: one in the form of a portable device, embedded within a waist purse or fanny pack, and the other one as a desk panel, following language therapy standards. Both versions were developed with the same central circuit, which because of its modular design could be used with different external configurations. Also, design considerations allow for the expansion of the number of messages from 8 to 16, the addition of a sequence of lights for message activation (when the patient's condition calls for it); or the addition of an external activation system based on especially adapted switches. The novel properties of this device are its modular energy-efficient design, and also the flexibility of its functions while utilizing the same hardware.
