The concept of smart antennas (also known as adaptive antennas) is not new. However, until recent years, their cost has prevented their use in commercial systems. Smart antennas are antenna arrays with smart signal processing algorithms used to identify spatial signal signature. Smart antenna tech-niques are used notably in acoustic signal processing, radar, radio telescopes, and cellular systems.
