Improved analysis of spaceborne radar signals using wavelet-based techniques

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is an Earth Observing System (EOS) that is considered as a successful exploratory mission performed by American Nation Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Japanese National Space Development Agency (NASDA). It provides a lot of environmental information that help reducing human affects on the Earth's environment (e.g. global warming). TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) is the first spaceborne radar that provides 3D reflectivity observations. Because of the nature of its extensive measurements variability over time and space, wavelet transform is a well-suited technique that can be used to analyze space radar data. This technique is a focused transformation in space and frequency. Bright band (BB) is an atmospheric layer with a very high radar reflectivity. It can be detected by using Multi-Resolution Analysis (MRA). Its detection can assist in precipitation classification (i.e. stratiform or convective). A modern convective-stratiform partitioning scheme is developed using wavelet transform analysis to make best use of cloud structure determined by radar reflectivity.
