On the nature of high-temperature superconductivity

A picture of the electronic structure, magnetism, and superconductivity in high-T
c
oxides is obtained from a simple analysis of experiments and models of the copper oxide planes. It is shown that magnetism is associated with holes on copper and superconductivity with holes on oxygen. The pairing force is not retarded. Questions about the motion of charges in an antiferromagnetic background and the many-body theory of high-temperature superconductivity are discussed. Differences between the cuprates and doped BaBiO
3
are emphasized.
