Prospective pulsed power applications of pseudospark switches

In this paper, results of comparative tests of commercially available TDI model pseudospark switches (PSS, also known as: cold cathode thyratrons, copper vapor & low pressure switches) versus mercury type D ignitron switches in Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) installations with energy storage up to 14 kJ, operating voltage 5-40 kV, peak currents Imax =190 kA, jitter 4-10 ns are presented. Another application, related to a concept dating back to the 1950's, for processing various materials by electric discharge in a liquid-filled bath, has recently emerged due to increasing cost of materials and energy, and strict environmental requirements. The data on tests of pulse electro-hydraulic modules with energy storage up to 3 kJ for operation with large volumes of processed materials (up to several tons per hour) are presented. In this paper various factors affecting PSS electrode erosion are considered. Recommendations for maximizing the service life of PSS switches are summarized.
