Tumour ablation with focussed ultrasound

Cancer is now recognised to be a global problem. There is an urgent need for a better non-invasive and non-surgical technique for cancer treatment. Hyperthermia has come into use in the recent past, owing to the limitation of other techniques. The hyperthermia modality is mainly based on focussing of heat energy within the tumour. There are other local hyperthermia techniques like radiofrequency and microwave, but focal ultrasound, with a focussing mechanism, is found to be more suitable for better penetration depth with better intensity in the focal zone. In this technique, ultrasound beams are required to be focussed to concentrate the total energy at a desired target, i.e. the area of tumour. In the present paper, theoretical calculations are carried out for tumour ablation by using focussed ultrasound beams. The present study would assist in the better health care of the common mass, mainly in cases of patients with cancer problems.
