Estimation of maximum Doppler frequency for handoff decisions

A previous paper considered the problem of adaptively determining the measurement averaging interval for handoffs through the estimation of the maximum Doppler frequency, f/sub D/. The investigation is continued with refined estimates for f/sub D/ and approaches to bias correction. An exact analysis for the f/sub D/ estimate as a function of the squared deviations of the logarithmically compressed signal envelope is presented. An extension of the algorithm for robustness in a Rician fading environment is given. The performance of the algorithm in the presence of additive Gaussian noise is analyzed. The role of the noise bandwidth is quantified. The effect of cochannel interference on the estimate is negligible.
