A model of the handover dwell time in mobile cellular systems

Handover request queueing has been proposed as protection scheme for future cellular networks and extensively analyzed. In this frame, however, the distribution of the handover dwell time-i.e. the allowed queue waiting time-has been only reasonably assumed. The paper modelizes the handover dwell time in a coverage geometry of circular cells. The satisfactory results of the modeling are compared with those obtained by simulation. A fitting of the handover dwell time distribution with a truncated gaussian function is also proposed, providing a measure of the fitting goodness in various test cases.
