The California IVHS program

Transportation is in a state of flux called IVHS (intelligent vehicle highway systems). No longer is the greatest demand upon civil engineers and the general construction industry to provide improvements to the system, but rather upon electronics and electrical engineers, computer scientists and transportation operators to find the proper mix of technological tools and operator integration to make the system work uniformly, consistently and efficiently. The New Technology Development Program, which includes the IVHS program, is a significant effort by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to tap technology's potential by conducting research and development in partnership with other governmental agencies, academia, non-profit organizations and private industry. In pursuing new technology opportunities, the Department's goals are to substantially improve mobility, safety and air quality and to reduce oil dependency in California.
