Non-resonant converter for megahertz switching

A novel method of zero-voltage switching for DC-to-DC converters is presented. The method is based on commutation with the aid of an inductor, where a short interval (dead time) with both switches off is provided for removing the current surge. The zero-voltage-switching condition is made independent of the duty ratio control by introducing control of the current-ripple constant using a saturable core. The output is produced by a separate circuit. With this method of switching, a DC-to-DC converter of 90% efficiency with switching frequency of about 1 MHz is achieved using PWM (pulse-width-modulated) control.<
