A methodology framework for the use of CASE-templates

The two traditional approaches to the development of information systems have been "make or buy". Recently, a hybrid third alternative has been emerging: the use of CASE templates. CASE templates are models of information systems acquired, used, and customised with the aid of CASE tools. This development strategy is characterised by the use of abstract models in all stages instead of plain text and programme code, in conjunction with integrated, automated tools supporting the entire life cycle. Various types of CASE templates are available on the market today, each kind requiring a different methodology for its use. The paper proposes a methodology framework to define and integrate the specific methodologies. This is accomplished on the one hand with the aid of a classification scheme that groups the CASE templates into categories according to the degree of completeness of the models. On the other hand, a basic methodology applicable to all types of CASE templates is defined, combining elements of the two traditional development strategies. This common approach is then applied to each class of CASE templates, taking into account their particular attributes to define the specific methodologies.<
