Communication enabled web applications The evolution of computer telephony integration

Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) allows a computer application to access features from a telephone device or telephony network. Traditional CTI applications are commonly proprietary-based, platform dependent and usually designed and implemented by telephony experts. Whereas the Web started with simple static pages, new models, like the Service Oriented Architecture allow application designers to build complex applications using pre-built, high-level functional services. Next generation CTI should follow this model. Like SOA for the Web, high-level communication services can be built on communication building blocks, enabling complex communication applications to be built. In addition, it should be easy to create Web-based and rich Internet applications that integrate these new communication services. In this paper, we present a web application mashup that uses a high-level communication service and also present experiences from our prototype implementation.
