Cable testing for advanced television systems

The author discusses rational expectations for the arrival of advanced television (ATV), based on the status of current efforts. He discusses the establishment, resources, and goals of Cable Television Laboratories, an R&D consortium formed by the cable industry in 1988, and examines the critical R&D issues that remain unresolved. He examines the likely form of cable testing and the factors, namely, large screen TV, prerecorded media, broadcast, and compatibility, which must be taken into account. He addresses what he calls the myth of the single universal standard, explaining why it is unlikely to occur.<
