Current status of rapidly solidified Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets

Nd-Fe-B alloys can be rapidly solidified to produce a highly stable, magnetically isotropic powder which can be processed directly into either bonded magnets or, if not pressed, into anisotropic magnets with energy levels exceeding 40 MGOe. Current processing methods are briefly reviewed, as are some of the unique advantages that these materials offer as a result of their extremely fine-grained microstructure. Development issues concerning these materials are discussed, including activities aimed at improving thermal performance, magnetic uniformity, and manufacturability of hot deformed materials. The status of and outlook for using anisotropic powders from ground hot-deformed materials are examined.<
