A Study of Ground-Plane-Level and Vehicle-Level Radiation Patterns of GPS Antenna in Telematics Applications

This paper studies the impact of antenna placement on the radiation pattern of a Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna in telematics applications. The radiation pattern of a GPS antenna is first measured on 1 m ground-plane. Then the radiation pattern of the same antenna is measured at three distinct locations on a sedan vehicle. Results are presented to show the impact of GPS antenna placement on its radiation pattern and to compare the ground-plane and vehicle-level radiation patterns
