System Controllers: Calculators or Computers

In recent years the complexity of microwave test systems and the amount of data they must acquire have significantly increased. Programmable calculators, which have been the controllers for many microwave test systems, are now being stretched to their limits. A more powerful alternative is available -- mini-computers. And the cost of minicomputers has decreased dramatically; thus using minicomputers as controllers of microwave test systems is now feasible. Indeed, many microwave test applications exist where the inherent advantages of mini-computers make their use mandatory.
