The use of C-band satellites for low cost, low data rate mobile applications

Based on experience in Desert Storm and other armed conflicts, the use of commercial SATCOM to support Department of Defense (DoD) communications is crucial to an operation's success. But, the use of commercial SATCOM to support low data rate (less than 64 Kbps) mobile or remote communication has been minimal, if nonexistent. Current commercial systems require large, narrow beam, antennas to prevent the interference inherent in the closely spaced commercial satellites (as little as 2/spl deg/ apart). This has limited these systems to large fixed site applications. This paper describes the use of simple signal processing techniques to support the use of broadbeam C-band antennas on small, low cost terminals. The proposed use of C-band systems with small broadbeam antennas opens up C-band satellites and technology to a whole new class of low data rate, mobile commercial and military applications not previously considered.<
