Fuzzy vs. conventional control

What are the advantages and disadvantages of fuzzy control as compared to conventional control? How does one relate new ideas and techniques in fuzzy control to established ones in conventional control so that true advances in control can be gained and so that some of the recent hype and over-stated claims can be avoided? The ISIC'93 Panel Discussion on "Fuzzy vs. Conventional Control" addresses the problem of answering these and other related questions. The author seeks to (1) establish the format for the panel discussion, (2) give a preview of the topics to be addressed so that the audience may formulate questions for the panel members before the discussion starts, and (3) focus the discussion on the critical issues that must be addressed in determining the value of fuzzy control as compared to conventional control.<
