The maturing of a valve regulated (VRLA) battery technology: ten years of experience

A new era in telecommunications standby power started 10 years ago with the advent of valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries in capacities ranging from 100 to 1000 Ah. Since then, the telecommunications industry, its services, telecom equipment and batteries supporting this equipment have undergone a major evolution. Industry-wide. VRLA batteries' share of annual battery sales have increased from zero to 60%. Reduced maintenance requirements, lighter weight, reduced footprint and volume, fewer environmental considerations, and lower installation and operating costs are features which make these batteries popular. As with any evolving technology, both users and suppliers have encountered obstacles and roadblocks. To be sure, manufacturers and users have made mistakes in adopting this new technology. However, as advancements in VRLA technology are made, the telecommunications industry will be able to provide services that would not have been possible without VRLA batteries.<
