Factors involved with designing cables for the process industries

The authors address factors to be considered in the design and selection of cables for the pulp and paper industry. The practical considerations and compromises that are necessary in selecting and specifying a meaningful cable construction are presented. Following a discussion of the economic impact of conductors, the authors concentrate on the insulation and jacket compounds. Polymers, polymer alloying, and the purpose and use of additives are discussed with respect to material and property enhancement. Material screening tests are reviewed. The many thermoset curing methods are presented along with their advantages and disadvantages. Cable design is discussed, with attention given to temperature rating vs. copper area, reduced wall constructions, smoke and toxicity, flame retardancy, and the many sheath and covering options.<
